Sipi Natural

Sipi Natural

Formerly known as Jose, this year it is back to basics and a name that stands on its own. Sipi is a well known tourist region with its breathtaking waterfalls and incredible views over the African plains. Sipi is also one of the most established coffee producing regions in Uganda, and in its peak in the 70s was responsible for helping replace much of the world's coffee shortfall when Brazil experienced devastating frost damage. Investment and infrastructure from large coffee exporters flooded the region - some of these facilities are still utilised today, but many are now left abandoned and a cold reminder of the temporary and exploitative way coffee is often acquired. Sipi coffee producers are some of the most experienced in Uganda, but also wary of coffee buyers and being taken advantage of. The Ugandan led Zukuka Bora team have made great strides in establishing trust in the region, with constant presence on the ground and more recently with the purchase of land for a buying station and processing facility. The experience of the resident producers has helped accelerate Zukuka Bora’s development and quality beyond expectations, particularly with alternative processing methods like the natural process used here. The ripe cherry is picked and dried on raised beds, turned regularly and monitored constantly reaching the desired moisture percentage. This year’s Sipi Natural has a vibrant green grape and pear acidity, accompanied by a strawberry sweetness. Thank you to Ken and the Sipi team for the latest version of a Commonfolk favourite.
