Big Hill [2022]
The Amazon jungle wasn’t supposed to be the site of something this big! For years Monte Grande [Big Hill] was just another big hill sitting amid the rice paddies, cow pastures and coffee farms, outside the Peruvian city of Jaén. That was until archaeologist Quirino Olivera began his excavation in 2010. What he uncovered was a spiral temple atop one of the largest ancient burial mounds ever discovered in the Amazon. We named this coffee ‘Big Hill’ in honour of the 5000 year old archaeological phenomenon that adorns the slopes it was grown on. Big Hill is made up of up a selection of over 50 coffee lots sourced from small 3-4 hectare farms between Jaén and San Ignacio. Farmers work collaboratively to cultivate the best quality coffee, while remaining committed to protecting their unique land and environment. Only the ripest cherries are harvested between May and November, before being fully washed and allowed to dry on covered drying beds or patios. We’re picking up white nectarine and pink lady apple acidity, and underlying lemon sorbet sweetness. We’re proud to be working with the legends at Caravela to ethically source and import this coffee.
