Sipi Falls [2021]
One of the most picturesque regions of Mt Elgon, Sipi Falls is a tourist destination with amazing waterfalls, hiking, natural springs and of course coffee. Nestled on the North-West Side of Mt Elgon at an elevation of over 2000 metres above sea level, the coffee growing conditions are ideal. Sipi Falls is an established coffee growing area, but the shift towards high quality specialty coffee is relatively new. Ken, Zukuka Bora’s Sipi Falls manager, is working with farmers to improve quality with selective harvesting and better processing methods. Farmers bring cherry to the Zukuka Bora site where it is floated and visually inspected. Zukuka Bora aims to pay the highest price for cherry on the mountain, but also requires the best quality cherry. Farmers are paid on the day for cherry, unlike other mills which defer payment until later in the season, which helps ensure the money goes directly to the farmers and their families. The coffee is then processed by the Zukuka Bora team. The coffee is pulped, washed and then fermented in tanks until clean. The coffee is then dried on raised beds before being stored ready for export. Sipi Falls has hints of tropical punch sweetness, paired with a clean sparkling acidity. We import this coffee ourselves.
