Karinga - Kenya [2020]

The Gitwe Farmers Cooperative Society was founded in 1983 and has expanded to over 650 members, with each farmer tending to around 1 hectare of land. The coop works together to create outstanding coffee. Coffee is grown alongside companion plants such as legumes and bananas. The additional bounty not only helps feed the family, but can be sold to generate supplementary income, while assisting to balance the soil and provide shade for the coffee shrubs. The coffee is sorted at the Karinga Factory and is depulped, fermented for 12-24 hours, rewashed and dried on raised beds for around 2 weeks.
